In recent decades, a growing number of digital solutions have been integrated to power transmission and distribution systems. These solutions include synchrophasors, inverter-based resources (IBRs), e.g., wind and solar, and grid edge intelligence, e.g., smart meters and smart thermostats. These digital solutions pose unprecedented challenges in grid management. Addressing these challenges requires power engineers to have a comprehensive yet in-depth understanding of the key functions of energy management systems (EMSs) of modern power systems. This course introduces the key functions of contemporary EMSs and promising technologies that have not been widely deployed in the contemporary EMSs. These functions include power system state estimations, and advanced techniques for grid monitoring and control. In addition, some trending topics cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence (AI) for power are also included in this course.
