Japanese history through the lens of comics studies; manga as a reflection of shifting social, political, economic, and national paradigms; manga and race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality; manga in times of war and rehabilitation; manga and Japanese youth cultures. Same course as ASIAN 454.
